A royal whisky
Dalmore is located in the northern Highlands of Scotland on the shores of the Cromarty Firth, a sea loch just above Inverness. Like a number of other old Scottish distilleries, Dalmore was originally a water mill. In 1839, it was bought by Alexander Matheson and converted into the distillery that still stands today.
The history of the current Dalmore actually begins in 1878, particularly with the stag antlers that serve as the logo of the single malt. That year, the distillery was rented to Alexander, Charles, and Andrew Mackenzie. Thirteen years later, these three brothers took over the distillery from Matheson. They were descendants of the Clan Mackenzie.
This clan has a wonderful history that goes back almost a millennium. One of the most important events in the family history took place in 1263. That year, Colin Fitzgerald, then head of the clan, saved the life of King Alexander III when he was attacked by a deer. As a thank you, the Clan Mackenzie has since been allowed to carry the royal stag antlers as an emblem. Something Dalmore has graciously done since it came into the hands of the Mackenzies.

Dalmore produces extremely accessible whiskies that are not only affordable but also approachable and soft. Sherry maturation is one of the important characteristics of Dalmore, where the master blender plays a key role. He loves to experiment with different types of sherry casks. Sometimes he uses up to 5 or 6 barrel types for a single whisky.
In addition to affordable whiskies, Dalmore has also released some single malts that are among the most expensive of all time. In 2018, the Dalmore Eos, a 59-year-old whisky, was sold for $117,510 at an auction in Hong Kong. And the year before, the Dalmore Paterson Collection, a collection of 12 unique single malts, was sold for 1 million pounds at the London department store Harrods.

Dalmore is now in the hands of Whyte & Mackay, which is also the owner of Fettercairn and Jura. They took over the distillery from the Mackenzie family in 1960, but remain true to the family history. For example, there is now a Dalmore King Alexander III. Additionally, the master blender takes the liberty to try fun new things. The Dalmore Cigar Malt is one example of this. This whisky pairs perfectly with a good cigar and has been one of the most popular single malts from the distillery for many years.
