Generally, there is an image that the Scottish whisky regions once emerged to indicate taste differences between various whiskies. In the case of the Highlands, that is certainly not true. On the contrary, the border between the Scottish Highlands and Lowlands is the result of political and administrative matters.
In the 18th century, the war with France was one of the major political issues in Great Britain. That war lasted long. And a war costs a lot of money. About half of the war was funded by imposing excise duties, for example, on malted barley or based on the production capacity of barley. While drafting regulations for this tax, a border was officially drawn between the Highlands and Lowlands.
In the Highlands, less tax had to be paid, but production was very limited. This encouraged illegal distilling, but quality became paramount. In the Lowlands, a lot had to be paid to the state, resulting in mass production of inferior whisky. It then took decades for whisky from the Lowlands to somewhat restore its reputation.
Because the Highlands cover a large part of Scotland, they are often divided into different subregions. Each region has its own characteristics, but it is difficult to pinpoint a specific flavor profile for each region. After all, two whisky distilleries can be located next to each other, but produce very different whisky. Below we provide more information about the subdivision of the Highlands, including some of the most famous distilleries.
