The Bruichladdich distillery is the most westerly distillery in Scotland. Driving along the sea arm Loch Indaal, you come to the village of Bruichladdich, where the eponymous distillery is located. On a clear day, you can see Bowmore across the way. The name Bruichladdich comes from Gaelic and means 'hill over the sea'. The distillery was built in 1881 by brothers William, Robert, and John Gourlay Harvey. The money came from a fund managed by their father William, who was a distiller in Glasgow, and in 1886, the Bruichladdich Distillery Co Ltd. was established.
After many closures and takeovers, the number of stills was doubled in 1975, and in 1981, Bruichladdich celebrated its 100th anniversary. After another closure in 1995, the distillery was purchased in 2001 by Mark Reynier from the independent bottler Murray McDavid.
The Bruichladdich Distillers Company is now owned by 25 shareholders. The Bruichladdich distillery has practically not changed since its founding; the floor where the two wash stills and the two spirit stills are located is still made of wood. The stills are heated with steam. The six washbacks are made of Oregon pine, and for maturation, sherry, bourbon, and also refill casks are used. The water used for making whisky and also for the cooling water comes from a small lake in the hills. When there is a risk of water shortage, which has occurred frequently, the cooling water is reused and cooled in a cooling tower.
The malt from Bruichladdich is non-chill filtered and is exclusively bottled at the distillery. In addition to the 10, 15, and 20-year-old Bruichladdich, special vintages are also released as limited editions. This Bruichladdich 10 years old is a breath of Islay, sharing a sunset over Lossit beach. A rare and precious union of nature and age-old skills. It has the same passion as that of 'the men who saw a shining light and thought they could turn this into a dream 10 years ago'. It worked; it is the true beginning of a new era under Jim McEwan and his Bruichladdich team.
