Islands Whisky

The Scottish Islands

The Scottish islands, steeped in history and imbued with whisky culture, are an irresistible destination for both landscape lovers and whisky connoisseurs. This unique location offers not only an abundance of breathtaking landscapes but is also home to some of the world's most beloved Scotch whiskies.

The Scottish islands, scattered across the Atlantic Ocean and the North Sea, form a picturesque and intriguing world of their own. With four major island groups - the Inner Hebrides, the Outer Hebrides, the Orkney Islands, and the Shetland Islands - the islands offer a diversity of landscapes, history, and cultures. From the dramatic cliffs of the Isle of Skye to the endless beaches of the Outer Hebrides, these islands have a captivating allure.

For whisky lovers, the Scottish islands are a true paradise. These islands are known for their distinctive Scotch whiskies that are infused with the surrounding nature and climate. The salty seawater, the influence of peat, and the changing weather contribute to the complex flavor profiles that define the island whiskies. Most islands have their own distilleries that proudly reflect the unique characteristics of the region in their whiskies.

Orkney

Orkney, with its rugged coastlines, green hills, and fascinating history, offers a unique terroir that influences the taste of the whiskies produced there. The changing climate, salty sea air, and rich land all contribute to the complexity of the Scotch whiskies of Orkney. These whiskies capture the essence of the island and bring it to life in every sip.

The Highland Park Distillery, located on the mainland of Orkney, is one of the most respected and celebrated producers of Scotch whisky in Scotland. Founded in 1798, Highland Park has a rich history of craftsmanship and innovation. The distillery is known for its commitment to traditional craftsmanship and its use of local ingredients, which contribute to the unique flavor profiles of its whiskies.

Isle of Skye

The Isle of Skye, located on the west coast of Scotland, is an island steeped in mystique and beauty. The dramatic Cuillin mountains, winding coastlines, and stunning waterfalls create a wondrous landscape. It is no wonder that the inspiration for many Scotch whiskies is found here, where the landscape and the soul of the island come together.

One of the most iconic distilleries on Skye is the Talisker Distillery, located on the shores of Loch Harport. Founded in 1830, Talisker embodies the essence of Skye in every bottle of whisky they produce. The rugged environment, the powerful sea breeze, and the influential climate have a lasting impact on the flavor profiles of Talisker's whiskies.

Isle of Jura

The remote island of Jura, nestled on the west coast of Scotland, is a treasure for whisky lovers. This beautiful island is known for its dramatic landscapes and isolation. The steep mountains, quiet beaches, and vast heather fields create a breathtaking backdrop infused with Scottish tradition and tales. It is this intriguing mix of natural beauty and historical heritage that forms the basis for the unique taste of Jura whisky.

The Jura Distillery, established in 1810, is the beating heart of the island's whisky heritage. This distillery is dedicated to creating whiskies that remain true to the rugged and mystical nature of Jura itself. Jura whiskies are distinguished by their balanced flavors and distinctive aromas, bringing the essence of the island to life in every bottle.

Lewis and Harris

Lewis and Harris, although technically one island in the Outer Hebrides, are divided into two parts each with its own character and beauty. Lewis is characterized by green hills and archaeological treasures, while Harris is known for its golden sandy beaches and azure blue seas. These islands form a natural painting that is not only visually appealing but also serves as the inspiration for the creation of the region's unique Scotch whiskies.

The Harris Distillery, founded in 2015, is one of the newest additions to the world of Scotch whisky and gin. This distillery is dedicated to creating whiskies and gins that capture the soul of Harris. Located on the ocean's edge, the distillery reflects the maritime environment and the island's passion in every distillation process.

Mull

Mull, surrounded by shimmering seas and with majestic mountains and lush heather fields, offers a landscape that resembles a painting. The alternation of rugged coastlines and lush valleys makes Mull a playground for nature lovers and explorers. It is this harmony between land and sea that forms the basis for the unique taste of Mull's Scotch whisky.

The Tobermory Distillery, located at the harbor of Tobermory, is a historical producer of delicious Scotch whisky. Established in 1798, the distillery has a long history of craftsmanship and tradition. The whiskies of Tobermory are infused with the spirit of Mull and reflect the warmth of the community and the rich natural environment.

Arran

The whiskies of Arran reflect the island's diversity in their flavor profiles. From light and fruity whiskies to more smoky and complex variants, each bottle takes you on a journey of discovery through the unique elements of Arran. Tasting Arran's whiskies is like experiencing the island's varied and rich history in every sip.

The Arran Distillery, located in Lochranza on the north side of the island, is a source of pride for the Arran community. Since 1995, the distillery has produced a variety of delicious Scotch whiskies that capture the spirit of the island. With a combination of traditional craftsmanship and modern innovation, Arran's whiskies have earned a special place in the hearts of whisky lovers worldwide.

Introduction to Islands whisky

It is probably purely from a geographical standpoint that these Scottish Islands are often grouped into a category by whisky enthusiasts. The similarity in taste cannot be, because the whisky produced on the islands along the Scottish north and west coast is incredibly diverse. Some whiskies are known as smoky, others as fruity and sweet, or even light and floral.

The fact that there are a considerable number of distilleries on the Scottish Islands is easily explained. Many of the distilleries date back to a time when making whisky was done illegally. It is wise to do so in a remote place. That means far from the big Scottish cities and out of sight of the tax authorities. Not all (illegal) distilleries from that period have managed to survive to the present, but there is still plenty of deliciousness to discover.

The different Islands

The Scottish Islands are all islands except for the legendary whisky island Islay, which is officially a separate whisky region. There are still a number of famous islands left. We will discuss a few below.

  • Isle of Jura: approximately 200 people live on the Isle of Jura, compared to thousands of deer. One single malt is made on the island. The original Jura distillery was established in 1810, but also closed its doors over a century ago. The current Jura distillery has existed since 1963. The whisky is generally subtly smoky with honey-like and maritime flavors.
  • Isle of Skye: this island is one of the most beautiful parts of Scotland and attracts busloads of tourists annually. For a long time, Talisker was the only distillery on Skye. The Talisker 10 is therefore one of the most famous single malts and an absolute classic. In 2017, a new distillery opened its doors, Torabhaig.
  • Orkney: until the 13th century, this archipelago was part of Norway. You can still see that influence everywhere on the islands. Highland Park has also embraced the Norse heritage. This distillery is one of the most famous in the world and produces a lightly smoky whisky. It is one of the few distilleries that still has its own malting floor. Scapa is the only other distillery on Orkney.
  • Arran: on this island, much distilling was done in the 18th and early 19th centuries, but the two current distilleries have only existed for a relatively short time. Arran Distillery (now also called Lochranza) has been around since 1995 and has built an excellent reputation in that short time. The owners of Arran opened a second distillery, Lagg, in 2017.
  • Isle of Mull: to the north of Islay is the Isle of Mull. The only distillery on this island is Tobermory. However, two very different types of whisky are made there. The first is unpeated and is marketed simply as Tobermory. In addition, a heavily peated whisky is produced, Ledaig.
