Although the production of Indian single malt whisky is similar to that in Scotland, there are several factors that influence the taste of Indian whisky. The most obvious is the climate. Scotland has a rather cool, humid climate. India is generally warm and dry. This difference in climate has a huge effect on the maturation of the whisky. It is said that some aspects of the maturation process occur three to four times faster than in Scotland. It is one of the reasons you rarely see age statements on Indian whisky, as most whisky, in terms of maturation years, is quite young but surprisingly mature in taste.
Another, less obvious factor is the barley used. Two-row barley is generally used for whisky production. Not only in Scotland but also in other major whisky countries. However, India also uses six-row barley. This barley grows in the north of India, near the border with China. The climate is cooler there. In theory, this barley is less suitable because the alcohol yield is lower. Yet distillers in India enjoy using this unique type of barley because it creates a unique and recognizable flavor profile and character.
Neelakanta Rao Jagdale paved the way for Indian whisky. In 2004, he saw an opportunity for the then unknown Amrut, and he sent his son to Glasgow to formally launch Amrut as single malt whisky. It didn't turn into an instant success story, but several crucial moments changed the course of Amrut. The first was a series of blind tastings at the famous whisky pub The Pot Still in Glasgow. Guests found it hard to believe this mature whisky came from India. The second, and most crucial moment, came when the influential whisky writer Jim Murray included an Amrut whisky as one of the highest scoring whiskies in his Whisky Bible in 2010.
Amrut was closely followed by Paul John, a single malt that perhaps can't yet match its renowned predecessor in sales, but certainly holds its own in reputation. Paul John's whiskies win award after award, and are praised by both enthusiasts and experts. John Distilleries is a relatively young company, founded in 1992, and today is one of the largest producers of alcoholic beverages in India.
The youngest offspring that has emerged from the Indian whisky world is Rampur Indian Single Malt. This brand came to life in 2016, when it was introduced in the United States, but is now also available in the Netherlands. Rampur is made at Radico Khaitan, the oldest distillery in India.
