Introduction to Teeling Whiskey
The Teeling name has been associated with Irish whiskey production since 1782. That year, Walter Teeling built his distillery in the Liberties district of Dublin. At that time, there were 37 independent distilleries in the Irish capital. But after the last one disappeared in the 1970s, it took decades before a distillery was reopened in Dublin.
In 2015, it finally happened: brothers Jack and Stephen Teeling opened the Teeling Distillery. It was the first new distillery in Dublin in over 125 years. The logo is a phoenix rising from a still - a reference to the resurrection of the Teeling name.
Before the establishment of Teeling, the brothers were already involved with Cooley, an Irish whiskey distillery founded by their father in 1987. This distillery was sold to Beam International for millions in 2012. As part of the agreement, Jack and Stephen purchased a total of 16,000 barrels of whiskey from Cooley.
Teeling, the best whiskey in the world
Because the brothers have access to such a huge stock of whiskey, they can also bring a lot of older single malt to the market. In 2019, they won the award for Best Single Malt in the World at the World Whiskies Awards for their 24-year-old whiskey, which is now naturally sold out everywhere and only sold for a lot of money at auctions.
Fortunately, Teeling makes more than enough good, affordable whiskey that is still available. Often, these whiskies are a mix of the old stock from Cooley and the new whiskey being made at Teeling Distillery. In the future, more and more of the Teeling whiskies will be completely produced at their own distillery. An example of this is the Teeling Blackpitts, a particularly tasty peated Irish whiskey that is triple distilled.
