History of Lagavulin
Lagavulin is one of the three famous distilleries on the southern coast of Islay — the other two are Ardbeg and Laphroaig. The distillery was founded in 1816 by John Johnston and is named after the rocky bay where the distillery is located. However, before whisky was legally distilled at that spot, there had already been ten other illegal distilleries active in the same area since 1742.
Over the course of two centuries of history, the distillery has changed hands several times. One of the most famous owners is Peter Mackie, who took over Lagavulin from his uncle in the late 19th century. Earlier, Mackie was also a representative of Laphroaig, but he lost that title for unknown reasons. Naturally, Mackie was not happy about that. So, in 1908, he built a replica of Lagavulin that he named Malt Mill. The goal? To compete with Laphroaig in the market. That didn't work, but the now-closed Malt Mill has achieved a significant cult status. That distillery played a key role in the comedy film 'The Angel's Share'.
In 1988, Lagavulin became one of the six original Classic Malts of Scotland (along with Cragganmore, Dalwhinnie, Glenkinchie Oban and Talisker). This status worked wonders for the already considerable popularity of Lagavulin.
Lagavulin on television
Lagavulin is also popular among actors. The most famous example is perhaps Nick Offerman. He played the role of Ron Swanson in the highly rated comedy series Parks & Recreation. That character was a big fan of Lagavulin. And what turned out? The actor himself too! The news quickly reached the distillery, after which Nick Offerman recorded a number of viral Lagavulin videos. Shortly thereafter, the actor even got his special own whisky, the Lagavulin Offerman Edition.
In addition, Lagavulin was also part of the Game of Thrones Single Malts which was released in honor of the final season of the beloved television series. The distillery was chosen as the representative of House Lannister, one of the iconic families of Westeros.
