The home of Cragganmore in Speyside is guarded by a striking wrought iron gate featuring the name, which comes from the nearby hill, Craggan Mor. The stones for building the distillery also came from here.
The Cragganmore distillery was founded in 1869 by John Smith, who is said to have been the most experienced distiller of his time. He had been the manager of Macallan, Glenlivet, and Wishaw and was the tenant of the Glenfarclas distillery when he persuaded the owner, Sir George Macpherson-Grant, to lease him land in Ballindalloch along the Strathspey railway to build a new distillery.
Cragganmore was the first distillery to consciously take advantage of the benefits of a railway, and a private siding was built to facilitate train traffic to the distillery. John Smith was a great train enthusiast, but because he weighed 140 kilos, he could not fit through the door of a regular carriage and had to travel in a goods wagon.
He passed away in 1886 and left the company to his son Gordon, who largely rebuilt the distillery in 1901. It is in that state that we still know it today. The four flat stills, designed by John Smith himself, have always withstood the test of time.
Despite later changes of ownership and two world wars, a complex, highly valued single malt whisky continues to be made at Cragganmore, classified by blenders in 1925 as the best blending malt in all of Speyside.
