The Glenrothes distillery is located south of the town of Rothes. The Burn of Rothes, which originates in the Mannoch hills, flows through the site of the distillery. "Rothes" translates loosely to "meeting of the water". The Burn of Rothes "meets" the "water" of the River Spey to the northeast of the town of Rothes. Glenrothes indicates the place where the distillery is built, namely in the valley of the Burn of Rothes.
The Glenrothes distillery was founded in 1878. In May 1922, 200,000 gallons of whisky were lost due to a fire in warehouse No 1. In 1989, the stillhouse was completely renovated and the number of stills was increased, after which two more stills were added in 1989. There are now five wash stills and five spirit stills in the Glenrothes stillhouse, with twenty washbacks made from Oregon pine. Both refill casks and ex-bourbon and sherry casks are used for maturation.
For the maintenance of the casks, there is an in-house cooperage. Surrounding the distillery are old fields from the Brauchhill farm. On these fields are four springs, which are owned by the distillery. From the spring named The Lady's Well, brewing water is drawn via a pipeline. To cool the condensers, water is pumped from the stream Dounie Burn. The highly regarded malt from Glenrothes comes as a single malt in a transparent belly bottle in an award-winning packaging with a handwritten narrow label.
