Introduction to Speyside Whisky
It is not a coincidence that there are dozens of whisky distilleries in Speyside. This is all related to the excellent natural water of that region, which contains very few minerals. The fact that the area was difficult to reach at the beginning of the 19th century only worked in favor of the distillers at the time. This meant few visits from the tax office. Therefore, whisky was often made illegally in Speyside.
The Speyside region was at the cradle of the first boom period of the Scottish whisky industry. King George VI drank an illegally distilled whisky from Speyside during a trip to Edinburgh, from the district Glen Livet. Exactly which whisky he tasted is unclear, as The Glenlivet did not yet exist. King George VI developed a passion for whisky, which greatly enhanced the reputation of the Scottish 'water of life'.
One of the most important places in Speyside is the village of Dufftown. Not so much because of its central location, but because there were (and still are) many distilleries. Once, there were seven distilleries, including BalvenieGlenfiddich and Mortlach still exist today. That's why it is sometimes said: Rome was built on seven hills, Dufftown stands on seven stills.
Flavors & types of Speyside whisky
There are so many distilleries in Speyside that it's not possible to capture them all under one flavor profile. Light and floral whiskies are made, but also robust single malts that have matured in sherry casks. In the first category, you could place Glenfiddich and Glenlivet, but some whiskies from these distilleries have a completely different flavor profile. Macallan and Glenfarclas are a good fit in the lineup of robust whiskies. Additionally, there are also whiskies with a hint of smoke, like Benromach.
Famous Speyside distilleries
Glenfiddich & Balvenie: two sister distilleries owned by the same family and located next to each other. Glenfiddich, which valley of the deer means, is the world's most popular Scotch single malt, while Balvenie also has many fans.
Macallan: this distillery is traditionally known for whisky that has matured in sherry casks. This is still the case, but in recent years other types of casks have also been used.
Glenlivet: this is the most popular Scottish whisky in the United States. Glenlivet is accessible, but there's always plenty to taste and smell. The name of this distillery has been synonymous with quality for nearly two centuries. So much so that other distilleries used to put the name Glenlivet on their label.
