WhistlePig is one of the biggest success stories in the modern whiskey world. The brand has only existed since 2007, but this American rye whiskey has won an incredible amount of awards. That success is largely credited to the legendary master distiller David Pickerell, who previously worked for Maker's Mark and unfortunately passed away in 2018. Did you know that a Dutchman is one of the co-founders?
The story of WhistlePig begins in 2007, when Raj Peter Bhakta bought a dairy farm in Vermont. Bhakta was already a modest celebrity in America at that time, partly due to his appearance on Donald Trump's TV show, The Apprentice. He also ran for the American Congress in Pennsylvania.
At that time, Bhakta already knew the Dutchman Wilco Faessen. Together, they were part of the team that founded WhistlePig. Pickerell also played an important role from the very beginning. The goal was to create a single estate whiskey to produce. This means that all ingredients come from the estate itself. But it took a while for WhistlePig to have its own distillery. Therefore, Bhakta and Faessen initially sourced their whiskey from elsewhere, including from Canada and the U.S. state of Indiana.
WhistlePig's first whiskey hit the market in 2010. This was made using a stock of about 300 to 400 casks of Canadian rye whiskey. It was thanks to Pickerell that the founders tracked down that stock. With those casks, the adventure of WhistlePig really took off.
WhistlePig owes much of its flavor to the finishing of whiskey. This means that the whiskey spends a relatively short period in a special type of barrel before bottling. This is the case, for example, with the WhistlePig 12 Year Old World Cask Finish Ryewhich creates an additional taste experience through the use of Sauternes, Madeira, and Port casks.
One of the most exceptional aspects of WhistlePig is the use of oak wood from Vermont. The whiskey barrels from this distillery are made from it. These oak trees grow on the farm and in the surrounding landscape. Vermont is very northern, resulting in a short growing season for the oak trees. As a result, the oaks from Vermont have more growth rings, which has a distinctive influence on the whiskey.
The WhistlePig distillery has been in operation since 2015. All whiskey made there is aged in oak barrels from Vermont. An example of this is the FarmStock Rye. This Triple Terroir Whisky is made from a large proportion of WhistlePig’s own distilled whiskey, supplemented with sourced whiskey (for example, from Canada).
