Introduction to Sà¤ntis Malt
Sà¤ntis Malt is made in Appenzell, Switzerland by Brauerei Locher. This is a family business that has been brewing beer for five generations according to their own traditional recipe. They started brewing beer in 1886, but it took a long time before they also began distilling their precious grains.
That was not a conscious choice, as making whisky was prohibited in Switzerland for a long time. Until 1999 it was not allowed to make grain alcohol (such as gin, jenever, and whisky), an antique remnant from World War II. Since this ban was lifted, a thriving whisky industry has emerged in Switzerland, with Sà¤ntis Malt leading the way.
Beer and Sà¤ntis Malt
Brauerei Locher has been around for over a hundred years and is a well-known name in the Swiss beer world. The whisky branch, on the other hand, is still relatively young. It was Karl Locher (of the fifth generation) who first made whisky. Perhaps almost by accident, as until friends pointed it out to him, Karl did not even realize he had made whisky. But the best inventions are sometimes made by accident. This is certainly the case with Sà¤ntis Malt.
The whiskies from Sà¤ntis mainly mature in old beer barrels, some as old as 60 to 130 years! These barrels were used in the 1970s to transport beer to local inns. While other producers use sherry, port, or bourbon barrels to enhance the flavor of their whisky, Sà¤ntis Malt proudly boasts its beer roots.
The Sà¤ntis Malt Sigel, for example, matures in small beer barrels of 50 liters. You can taste and smell that immediately! And then there is of course the award-winning Sà¤ntis Malt Dreifaltigkeit. This whisky matured in former beer barrels, but is also smoky. Whisky writer Jim Murray declared the Dreifaltigkeit the 'Best European Whisky' in 2010.
