History of Redbreast
Nowadays Redbreast is made at the Midleton Distillery in Cork, a distillery that has been in existence since 1975. But the history of Redbreast goes back much further. This brand was already sold at the beginning of the 20th century by W & A Gibley in Dublin. At that time, the whisky was made at Jameson's Bow Street, a distillery where no whiskey is made anymore, but which is a hugely popular tourist attraction in the heart of Dublin.
You might be wondering where the name comes from. The story goes that it was coined by a chairman of Gilbey, who was also an avid birdwatcher. And a robin is of course a well-known European songbird. Presumably, the name is also a reference to the reddish tint of the whiskey.
The Irish whiskey industry went through a massive crisis that reached its low point in the 1960s and 1970s. The few remaining distilleries joined forces, marking the beginning of Irish Distillers. Redbreast struggled during those years: no more than 18,000 liters were produced annually. For comparison, Glenlivet produces currently every day three times as much.
Irish Single Pot Still Whiskey
One of the reasons Redbreast had such a hard time was because Irish single pot still whiskey was not very popular anymore. This was due to a multitude of economic and political reasons. This whiskey style can only be made in Ireland and has a unique flavor. This relates to the use of not only malted barley (as with single malt whisky), but also unmalted barley.
This choice was made centuries ago for tax reasons, as a lot had to be paid for malted barley. But what turned out? It produced full, spicy whiskey with a oily mouthfeel and a special, unmistakable character. The aging of Redbreast then mainly takes place in former sherry casks, which adds many beautiful fruit tones to the whiskey.
