At only 15 years old, John Walker opened his grocery store in Kilmarnock, Scotland, in 1820. He lost his father less than a year earlier, but nonetheless he built his business at full speed. The foundation was laid right in the early days when John grew into a pioneer in the field of blended whisky. This did not go unnoticed by his customers, who eagerly bought John's whiskies.
Son Alexander built upon the foundation laid by his father. In 1867, he introduced Old Highland Whisky and Special Old Highland Whisky. These were the precursors to the now globally known Johnnie Walker. Red Label and Black Labelwhich first appeared on the market in 1909. From that moment on, all whiskies were named after the color of the label. In the mid-1950s, Johnnie Walker achieved the status of the best-selling whisky in the world. The brand holds that position to this day.
Does the best exist? That's of course subjective. The range of Johnnie Walker is certainly large, so plenty of choices! For years the assortment consisted only of the Red and Black Label, but since 1992 this has quickly expanded. First, the Blue Label was created, a whisky made from the oldest stocks, sometimes even from closed distilleries. This was followed by the Johnnie Walker Gold Label and the 15-year-old Green Label. Recently, even special Game of Thrones whiskies were launched.
Which one suits you best depends on your taste, of course. That’s why we always explain nicely what makes a particular whisky so tasty, special, rare or interesting. But note: the most expensive whisky is not necessarily the tastiest. Sometimes it is, of course, but taste remains very personal.
