Blended whisky is a mix of two or more whiskies. These are bottled together and sold under one brand name. Most blends consist of a combination of grain whisky and malt whisky. Malt whisky is made from malted barley and distilled in copper stills. Distilleries like Glenfiddich and Glenlivet for example, make malt whisky. Distilling is done in batches, just as it was done hundreds of years ago.
Grain whisky is a newer way of making whisky. But that is relative, because this method has also existed since the 19th century. Grain whisky does not have to be made from barley, but is often produced from other grains such as wheat, corn or rye. Distillation takes place in so-called column stills. These are more efficient than traditional copper stills and can continue to produce continuously.
Grain whisky is often somewhat lighter in taste than malt whisky. It is the so-called master blenders, people with an incredible sense of smell and taste, who manage to combine these two different whisky styles into a culinary masterpiece.
Besides blended whisky, there is also something known as a blended malt whisky. A blended malt consists entirely of different malt whiskies. Grain whisky does not come into play at all then. A good example of a blended malt whisky is the popular Monkey Shoulderwhich consists of whisky from, among others, Glenfiddich, Balvenie, and Kininvie.
