In the glorious Victorian era, the whisky region of Campbeltown was the epicenter of the whisky industry in Scotland. At that time, there were as many as more than 30 distilleries in the region. However, much has changed over the years and many distilleries on the peninsula have closed. The closing of the many distilleries, combined with the small supply and high demand, has led to a scarcity of whisky with a briny nose. Campbeltown is an isolated place, far from the inhabited world and unique compared to other areas in Scotland. The whisky distilled here is also unique and cannot be compared to whiskies from Speyside, the Highlands, Islay, or the Lowlands. Despite the fact that currently only a few distilleries are still active in Campbeltown, the style is idiosyncratic and has a unique character. Due to its uniqueness, the Campbeltown region is classified as one of the five regions of Scotland. Each region has its own specific characteristics, including the whisky from the Campbeltown peninsula, where only three distilleries are currently active.
Glen Scotia, founded in 1832, is one of those three distilleries. It is also one of the smallest distilleries in Scotland. The craftsmanship and love for the water of life are still evident at Glen Scotia. Each cask is still selected and assessed by the Master Blender, John Peterson. The distillery of Glen Scotia is still nearly in the same state as it was in the 19th century when the then owner Duncan MacCallum refurbished the distillery. An idyllic place that makes many hearts of whisky lovers beat faster.
