Frapin Grande Champagne Cognac
There are very few Cognac producers who can match the heritage of Frapin. This family has been living in the southwest of France for over 750 years. Initially, they focused on making wine, but for many generations now they are also known for their great Cognac. This comes from the Grande Champagne, the most prestigious Cognac region in France.

Famous family members
In a family whose history spans 21 generations, it is not surprising that there have been some famous family members throughout the centuries. The most notable name is the 16th-century writer François Rabelais. He is one of the most well-known humanists of the Renaissance. Historians regard Rabelais, who is at the birth of modern European literature, as one of the best writers of his time. In honor of their famous relative, the Frapin Cuvee Rabelais was launched, one of the most impressive cognacs ever from Frapin.
In the 17th century, another family member, Pierre Frapin, was the apothecary of King Louis XIV. For this reason, the king granted the family their coat of arms at the time. That coat of arms consists of a French lily (symbolizing the king) and two trees (symbolizing apothecaries). The coat of arms was long featured on all Frapin bottles. At the end of the 20th century, this was changed to a quill pen, in tribute to François Rabelais.
Grande Champagne
The Cognac region consists of six different districts, each with its own characteristics. These characteristics are largely due to the different types of soil. Cognac produced in the Grande Champagne or Petite Champagne districts is generally considered to be the highest quality Cognac. When Cognac from both districts is blended, it is referred to as Fine Champagne Cognac.
But why settle for half? That is why the Frapin family only produces cognac from Grande Champagne. In that region, all the family vineyards are located. They also have complete control over the production.
A small world
Today, the vineyards and distilleries are in the hands of Genevieve Frapin and her husband Max Cointreau. Their daughter Béatrice plays an important role in management. This immediately highlights how small the Cognac world is. Through the marriage of Genevieve and Frapin, the couple is also involved with Rémy Martinone of the most important Cognac houses in the world. Although it is a competitor of Frapin, Rémy Martin is owned by the Cointreau family.
