What is Single Malt Whisky?
Single malt is a type of grand cru of the whisky world. Rightly or not, but the reputation of this type of whisky is synonymous with quality. Some of the most prominent distilleries in the world fall under this category, such as Macallan, Highland Park, Yamazaki and Ardbeg.
But what exactly is single malt? By breaking down the term, you get a long way, starting with single. This indicates that the whisky is produced at a single distillery. This is in contrast to a blended whisky, which consists of whiskies from sometimes dozens of distilleries.
With malt is referred to as barley, one of the main ingredients of malt whisky. A single malt consists of 100% barley, a grain that is widely cultivated in major whisky countries such as Scotland and Ireland.
Difference between Single Malt and Blended Whisky
Where single malt whisky is produced at a single distillery, blended whisky is a mix of two or more whiskies from different distilleries. These are bottled together and sold under one brand name. Most blends consist of a combination of grain whisky and malt whisky.
Malt whisky is made from malted barley and distilled in copper stills. Distilleries like Glenfiddich and Glenlivet, for example, make malt whisky. The distilling is done in batches, exactly as it was done hundreds of years ago.
Grain whisky is a newer way of making whisky. But that is relative, because this method has also existed since the 19th century. Grain whisky does not have to be made from barley but is often made from other grains, such as wheat, corn, or rye. The distillation takes place in so-called column stills.
