The history of Tia Maria
In the 17th century, a beautiful young Spanish aristocrat fled the unrest brought by the colonial war on the island of Jamaica, her maid saved a family treasure. A small jewelry box with black pearl earrings and an old manuscript with the recipe for a mysterious liqueur. The recipe was named after the brave woman, Tia Maria was born. The recipe lay dormant for many years before being rediscovered in the 1940s by Dr. Kenneth Leigh Evans, who started producing and marketing it. From that day on, Tia Maria became the favorite of coffee liqueurs around the world and was even used in the very first recipe for Espresso Martini, more than forty years ago.
