The legend of Michter's
Michter's now comes from Kentucky, the Mecca of American whiskey. But long, long ago, the story of Michter's began in Pennsylvania. At that time, the distillery was called Shenk's, named after the founder John Shenk, who first brought the brand to market in 1753.
According to legend, Michter's played a notable role during the American Revolution. There are rumors that George Washington, then a general but later the first president of America, kept his troops warm with whiskey he bought from John Shenk.
In the middle of the 19th century, the distillery was bought by Pennsylvania Dutchman Abraham Bomberger. The name of the distillery changed and for many decades it was known as Bomberger's. After Prohibition, the distillery eventually came into the hands of Lou Forman.
That was also the moment when the name Michter's was used for the first time. This brand came out of Forman's hat, who used his sons Michael and Peter as inspiration. Michter's is a combination of those two first names.
At the end of the 1980s, Bomberger's closed its doors during a crisis period for the whiskey industry. Fortunately for enthusiasts, the brand was revived. The whiskey is made elsewhere, but the taste of modern Michter's remains fantastic!
How is Michter's made?
There are a number of elements that determine the taste of Michter's. Below you can read more.
- The barrels: these are made at Michter's from new American oak that has been dried for 18 to 48 months. This ensures that fewer tannins are released into the whiskey.
- Toasting and charring: by toasting a barrel from the inside, the whiskey comes into better contact with the sugars of the wood. The sugars caramelize and become concentrated. They form a kind of natural barrier in the wood and give flavor and color to Michter's whiskey.
- Lower alcohol percentage: the rye and bourbon of Michter's is filled into the barrel at 51.5%, while it is more common to do so at 62.5%. According to Michter's, this adds value to the interaction of the whiskey with the wood.
- Warming cycle: through climate control, Michter's simulates additional warming cycles during the winter months. This contributes to the interaction between whiskey and wood, theoretically extracting more flavor.
