Somewhere on the Isle of Islay, that's for sure. But which distillery? Only a very select group of people knows. Loch Finlaggan
The single malt from Finlaggan has existed since 1992, when a former director of Morrison Bowmore Distillers founded his own whisky company. His goal was to capture the taste and atmosphere of the legendary whisky island of Islay in a bottle. That is why the name Finlaggan was chosen, a loch on the northern side of the island.
In the lake lie several islands that played an important role in the history of Scotland. On Eilean Mor and Eilean na Comhairle, the Clan MacDonald, the largest and most influential family in the country, was installed as Lords of the Isles. This clan was in power until 1493, after which King James IV took over leadership.
On Eilean Mor, the largest island in the loch, there are also the ruins of Finlaggan Castle. This castle was once inhabited by the Lords of the Isles and dates back to the 13th century. It is estimated that the castle was largely destroyed in the 15th or 16th century.
Isle of Islay
Finlaggan Single Malt Whisky must convey the flavor of Islay. But what is Islay actually? It is one of the many islands off the west coast of Scotland and by far the most famous whisky island in the world. Currently, there are nine distilleries active on Islay in an area that is not even half the size of the province of Utrecht. And they are not just any distilleries. What about Ardbeg, Laphroaig or Lagavulin? Or otherwise Bowmore, Caol Ila and Bruichladdich? And nowadays there are even plans to expand the number of distilleries.
Whisky distilling is in the blood of every resident of Islay. Especially the production of smoky whisky is what Islay is known for, so it's only logical that Finlaggan is also smoky whisky. We will just never know for sure where the whisky is made. It is even possible that it does not always come from the same distillery.
