The name Balblair comes from Gaelic and means among other things "town of the plain". Balblair was established by John Ross in 1790 and is one of the oldest still-producing distilleries in Scotland. Robert Cumming, who was a notary in Banff, was the last private owner of Balblair. He was also the owner of the Old Pulteney distillery.
After various renovations, he converted the Balblair stills from coal to steam, Cumming sold the distilleries in 1970 to Hiram Walker and in 1996 the distilleries were sold to the current owner Inver House, who operate these specific distilleries completely independently.
The name Balblair comes from Gaelic and has two meanings including "battlefield" and dates back to the time of the Vikings. The stillhouse contains three stills with a very distinctive shape. They have a very bulbous bottom, with a wide and fairly short neck. The new spirit is aged in refill and bourbon barrels. The water comes from the Ault Dearg Burn and is first used for cooling water, so that it has the desired temperature without using energy.
Balblair is created not only like most whiskies by utilizing various elements from nature such as rich soil, pure water and peat but also by the clean air in Edderton, which is considered the purest in Scotland. Balblair also has those typical characteristics of the Northern Highlands and all these elements give the malt of Balblair its unique character. Additionally, Balblair is at the heart of the Glen Talloch blends, one of the best-selling whiskies in the Netherlands.
