What is Baileys liqueur?
Baileys is a unique drink based on Irish cream liqueur, loved for its rich and creamy texture. It combines fresh Irish cream with Irish whiskey and other fine ingredients, resulting in a perfectly balanced liqueur. The origin of Baileys
The founders of Baileys had a simple yet quite complicated dream. Ireland is known for its great, smooth Irish whiskey and the fantastic dairy cream produced there. The goal was to combine these two products. Although the founders came up with the idea in 1971, it wasn't until 1974 that they were ready to introduce Baileys Irish Cream to the world.
Why did it take so long? The answer is simple: cream is a perishable product that cannot just be stored for a long time. It was thanks to two individuals, Matt Gluckman and Matt McPherson, that Baileys Irish Cream eventually came to be. They discovered a technique that allowed Irish whiskey and fresh cream to be combined without compromising the quality of the cream.
How is Baileys made?
The ingenious work of Matt and Matt was rewarded: nowadays there is no liqueur more popular than Baileys. Approximately 80 to 90 million bottles are sold each year. That also means that a lot goes into making this cream liqueur so that millions of people can enjoy this unique product every day.
Every bottle of Baileys sold is made in Ireland, at one of the two production sites in Dublin and Belfast. There, fresh cream is delivered daily. In total, there are 1500 dairy farms associated with the Baileys network, good for about 40,000 cows. Together, these cows produce about 200 million liters of milk per year. And that is really necessary because about half of every bottle consists of cream.
The makers of Baileys Irish Cream therefore set high standards for that cream, which must come exclusively from the Holstein-Friesian, an American dairy cow. These cows graze freely in the pasture and are only fed four specific types of grass.
Irish pot still whiskey
But of course, more is needed than milk to give Baileys its characteristic flavor. For example, vanilla, cocoa, and sugar are also part of the recipe. But besides cream is Irish whiskey by far the most important ingredient. The Irish have been distilling whiskey for many centuries and are rightly proud of that tradition.
The traditional Irish style is called Irish pot still whiskey. This is triple distilled and made from both malted and unmalted barley (and sometimes also other grains). Irish whiskey is known as a smooth, accessible whiskey. That quality makes it a perfect partner for Baileys, a velvety cream liqueur.
Desserts with Baileys
There is no liqueur as versatile as Baileys. If you want to keep it simple, you only need to put some ice in a glass and pour in Baileys. This is the classic way to enjoy this cream liqueur. Give it a try, and you'll immediately see why.
But you can of course also drink Baileys in cocktails. There is a urban legend going around that combining Baileys with tonic turns out badly for you, but that's nonsense. Still, that wouldn't be our recommendation, because there are simply many tastier combinations to think of.
For example, try it in a Mocha Martini, the creamier version of an Espresso Martini. Or what do you think of a Baileys Tiramisu? It consists of Baileys, coffee, chocolate, brown sugar, mascarpone, and ladyfingers. An incredibly delicious cocktail that is unmatched. By the way, Baileys is easy to combine with hot chocolate or coffee - also really a sublime idea. Especially during the dark months and especially during the holidays.
Last but certainly not least: Baileys is the perfect liqueur to make a dessert with. A dessert with Baileys is rich in flavor and ultimate luxury. What do you think of Baileys Irish Cheese Cake?
