Auchentoshan is located not far from Glasgow and is one of the oldest distilleries in the Scottish Lowlands, a region traditionally known for its smooth, grassy, and floral single malt whiskies. It is the triple distillation that makes Auchentoshan so special: no other Scottish distillery applies that method to all its whisky. History of Auchentoshan
Whisky has been made at the current Auchentoshan distillery since 1817. On the banks of the Clyde, one of the largest and most important rivers in Scotland, John Bulloch built the Duntocher distillery at that time. Like many other young distilleries, Duntocher had a difficult start. It didn't take long before the company went bankrupt.
The closed distillery was purchased in 1834 by John Hart and Alexander Fishie, who changed the name to Auchentoshan. This is derived from the Scottish Gaelic 'achad oisnin', which means 'corner of the field'. Under the leadership of these two men, the distillery had a relatively stable period, until Auchentoshan was sold in 1875. This happened many more times in the century that followed. During the Clyde Blitz of 1941, one of the warehouses was hit, causing tens of thousands of liters of whisky to flow into the river. A bomb crater now serves as a pond.
Although Auchentoshan is officially in the Lowlands, it is not far off. The border of the Highlands lies just a small bit further north. In fact, Auchentoshan's water source is officially in the Highlands.
Triple distillation
In Scotland, it is customary to distill whisky twice, but Auchentoshan deviates from that and uses a method that is actually more common in Ireland. Triple distillation is a bit more complicated than it sounds. It's not just a matter of simply distilling once more.
After the first distillation in the so-called 'wash still', the spirit goes to the 'intermediate still', a kind of intermediate step. This type of still can only be found in distilleries that distill more than twice. The part with the highest alcohol percentage is then distilled again in the 'spirit still'. Ultimately, the new make has an alcohol percentage that is above 80 percent.
The triple distillation combined with a short fermentation gives Auchentoshan a cereal aroma, which provides a nice balance with the citrus flavors.
