Aberlour is a small village in Moray, Scotland. It is located at a place where a mountain stream meanders down from the slopes of Ben Rinnes, a famous Scottish mountain. Aberlour is named after that mountain stream, Lour. The druids once believed that this mountain stream had healing properties. The distillery today stands on a site where people were once baptized. That place is still marked on an old granite lintel inscribed with 'St. Drostan's Well'.
The very first distillery in Aberlour existed for a very short time. It was established in 1825 but closed its doors eight years later when co-owners James and John Grant built their own distillery in the neighboring Rothes. That distillery, Glen Grant, still exists today.
The current Aberlour distillery is the brainchild of James Fleming. He was the son of a farmer and initially sold barley to local distilleries. In 1879, his dream came true with the opening of his own distillery. At the end of the 19th century, Aberlour burned to the ground. The distillery you can still visit today is a design by Charles Doig, the famous architect responsible for many distilleries.
Aberlour means something like 'mouth of the bubbling stream' in Scottish Gaelic. You pronounce it as follows: 'aa·bur·lou·wer'. The Scottish whisky world has many names that are difficult for Dutch speakers to pronounce. Think of tongue twisters like Laphroaig of Bunnahabhain. Or what did you think of Bruichladdich?
The Aberlour a'bunadh has a cult status. The first batch ever was launched in 1997. This whisky is inspired by an old bottle of Aberlour found in 1975 during the installation of two new stills. Around the bottle was a newspaper from 1898. According to legend, the workers who found the bottle had nearly emptied it. The last remnants were sent to a laboratory for analysis. This resulted in the Aberlour a'bunadh.
This whisky is bottled at cask strength and exclusively matures in casks that were previously used for Spanish Oloroso sherry. The name means something like 'back to the origin'.
