James Grant, a nephew of co-founder John Grant, has left his mark on Glen Grant more than anyone else. As the heir, he acquired the distillery in 1872. James, who was actually called 'The Major' by everyone, turned out to be a worthy successor to his predecessors.
James Grant was a valued inventor, engineer, social creature, and traveler. He was always looking for new ideas and dared to put them into practice. He was the first person in the Scottish Highlands to own a car. Glen Grant was also the first distillery to have electric light. The Major is also responsible for the slender, tall stills and so-called 'purifiers' that still play an important role in the fresh, malty flavor of Glen Grant whisky. As a tribute to James Grant, the distillery now makes The Major's Reservea fine, accessible single malt.
At the end of the 19th century, the Scottish whisky industry was booming. Demand from abroad was high, so The Major decided to build a second distillery. The creativity that can be tasted in the whisky was not spent on coming up with a name: Glen Grant 2 (later changed to Caperdonich).
The idea was to create an identical whisky that was the same as the original Glen Grant. However, that never succeeded. For good distillation, you may need a lot of scientific knowledge, but there are always elusive factors that influence the taste. That is the magic of Scottish whisky. This second distillery produced whisky only sporadically, and in 2002 the buildings were permanently demolished.
Glen Grant is a whisky that is generally well-liked. Aging mainly takes place in ex-bourbon barrels of American oak, which provides subtle fruity flavors and light hints of vanilla. Rightfully a people's favorite that fits into any drinks cabinet. While The Major's Reserve has no age designation, this is of course the case with the Glen Grant 10 yearsThis award-winning whisky has already convinced many whisky lovers of the quality of this idyllic distillery in Speyside.
