Don Julio Gonzalez was born in 1925 and at the age of seven he already worked in his uncle's tequila distillery. The craft was thus taught to him early on. That he opened his own distillery at the age of seventeen was no surprise to anyone. That distillery, Tres Magueyes, was opened by Don Julio in 1942.
For Gonzalez's 60th birthday, his sons made a tequila that was 100% made from agave. At that time, this was exceptional, as until that moment most tequila consisted of a smaller part from agave. The tequila from Don Julio's sons ultimately inspired the very first Don Julio Reposado. This new direction of the company certainly paid off for Don Julio.
Don Julio is also seen as the first premium tequila ever. The agaves are planted further apart so they can grow to maturity. Unfortunately, this is by no means a certainty in the tequila industry. Afterwards, the agaves are roasted for 72 hours, much longer than most competitors.
Don Julio has built a beautiful range of tequila over the years. At Tasting Collection, you can choose from different types. But what do terms like Blanco, Reposado, and Anejo actually mean? You can read about that below.
All variants of Don Julio Tequila are extra affordable at Tasting Collection, but which one should you have? Below we briefly explain the different versions and editions of Don Julio Tequila.
Also known as Silver or Plata, it is the least aged version of Don Julio Tequila. It is nice and clear and therefore works very well in cocktails.
Is aged a bit longer, between 2 and 12 months, in oak barrels making it a bit softer while still maintaining its freshness.
Is aged for a minimum of one year up to four years in oak barrels, making it extremely smooth and gaining much more flavor from the oak barrels.
Don Julio 70 is a tribute to 70 years of knowledge, expertise and innovation of the Don Julio brand. This tequila drinks smoothly like a true blanco tequila, but has the complexity of an aà±ejo. The Don Julio 70th Anniversary aged for 18 months in oak and was then filtered through charcoal: a unique Aà±ejo Claro Tequila.
The 1942 is the absolute top of Don Julio Tequila, 1942 stands for the year in which Don Julio was founded by Don Julio González. Aged for up to 32 months in the smaller stills of the Don Julio Distillery where only 3 barrels can be distilled at a time.
