Who is Sir Edmond?
Or rather: who was Sir Edmond? Because this extraordinary man is a historical figure from the 19th century. Edmond Albius was born a slave on the island of Réunion, which is not far from Madagascar. At the age of twelve, he discovered a new method for manually pollinating the vanilla orchid. This led to a real revolution in the vanilla industry.
Edmond's technique is still used today to pollinate the vanilla on the island. Unfortunately, he did not benefit much from it. When slavery was abolished in 1848, he started working as a kitchen servant. He was accused of stealing jewelry and was sentenced to 10 years in prison. After 5 years, he was granted clemency by the governor due to his remarkable contributions in the field of vanilla. He died in poverty at the age of 51.
