Meet Camus Cognac
Nowadays, Cyril Camus is at the head of this traditional cognac producer. He has a fresh, new perspective on the future and ensures that Camus keeps up with the times. However, he builds on the traditions and knowledge of the family members who came before him.
Camus is one of the five largest cognac houses and was founded in 1863 by winemaker Jean-Baptiste Camus. He was a winegrower and distiller who initially sold his cognac to larger producers. That changed with the establishment of his own company.
His sons took over and prioritized quality and innovation. Instead of selling cognac by the barrel, they were among the first to have their own bottle and label. Around that time, Camus also became the official cognac of the last tsar of Russia.
Is Camus Cognac good?
Yes, the family has proven that in the meantime. The French Cognac region is divided into six smaller regions. The Borderies, where many of Camus's vineyards are located, is in the epicenter of that area. According to many enthusiasts, the best cognac comes from the Petit and Grande Champagne, but at Camus they dare to break that tradition.
In fact, the best vineyards in the Borderies or Bons Bois can be better than some vineyards in the more highly regarded subregions. At Camus, they specifically seek diverse styles, so they can blend these together into interesting new flavor profiles. However, the characteristic floral character that the Borderies are known for often plays a leading role in Camus's cognac.
How is Camus Cognac made?
Most cognac houses make their cognac in roughly the same way. Among the larger houses, Camus has the most divergent and innovative method, which results in intensely aromatic cognac. Here are some of the most striking things Camus does:
- They use Folle Blanche instead of just Ugni Blanc grapes.
- Camus uses three different yeast strains.
- A small kettle of 2500 liters for both the first and second distillation rounds.
- Aging in small, lightly toasted barrels.
- Unique 'Instensity' method where part of the heads is added back to the heart of the distillation.
- Camus finishes some of their cognacs in former Port barrels.
