Glenfiddich: Valley of the stag
Glenfiddich (the 'ch' is pronounced like a soft G) means valley of the stag. This distillery is located in a beautiful green environment, next to the sister distillery Balvenie. Both are owned by William Grant & Sons, one of the few remaining family businesses in the Scottish whisky industry. Most distilleries are now in the hands of large multinationals.
Founder William Grant was born in 1839. Before he became an entrepreneur himself, he worked as a manager of Mortlach. This renowned distillery still produces delicious whisky today. But Grant wanted to be his own boss. So he founded Glenfiddich in 1887, not knowing that his then modest distillery would grow into the most popular Scottish single malt.
The single malt pioneers
Today, single malt whisky is considered the ultimate drink. However, this has not always been the case. Not so long ago, almost no one drank single malt. Even the biggest whisky lovers could barely buy anything other than the well-known blended whiskies, such as Johnnie Walker or Chivas.
Today, the selection of single malt whisky is enormous. We owe much of this to Glenfiddich. In the early 60s, William Grant & Sons had a conflict over the supply of grain whisky for their own blends. Therefore, they not only built their own grain distillery but also decided to market Glenfiddich more assertively as a single malt. It was the first time a Scottish single malt was promoted worldwide. In 1969, the distillery also opened a visitor center. That had never been done before either.
Experimental and innovative
Glenfiddich has a beautiful core range with age indicators, such as the 12-, 15-, and 18-year-old whiskies. But nowadays, Glenfiddich is also not afraid to experiment a bit. They do this with their so-called Experimental Series.
One of their first innovative whiskies was the IPA aged in beer barrels. But the Winter Storm from Canadian ice wine casks was also very distinctive and particularly delicious. All whiskies from this series show that Glenfiddich is not only a beautiful, traditional whisky producer, but also one that has not remained stagnant.
