For the history of Tanqueray, you actually need a book, but we don't have that much space (and time). We'll keep it short, but it all started when Charles Tanqueray established his distillery in the United Kingdom around 1830. It probably didn't take long for him to document the recipe that is still used today for London Dry Gin. So, Tanqueray has been made in the same way for almost 200 years.
It is said that the company also simply shipped their gin to islands off the coast of the United States during Prohibition. Through the black market and speakeasies, it was then a piece of cake for many Americans to get hold of Tanqueray. It is not entirely clear if this story is true, but it is a nice anecdote.
Tanqueray used to be made in London until the distillery was bombed by the Nazis in 1941. Only one of the stills survived the attack. This still is known as 'Old Tom' and is still present at Tanqueray's new home in Cameronbridge, Scotland.
The recipe for this gin is a closely guarded secret. We can only assume that it uses four botanicals: juniper, coriander seed, angelica root, and licorice. The gin is wonderfully balanced, and the creamy mouthfeel ensures it shines in a Gin & Tonic. Add a lemon peel for an explosion of flavor! By the way, it's rumored that Tanqueray was Frank Sinatra's favorite gin.
At Tanqueray, they make sure you have more than enough choice. With the classic London Dry Ginyou can never go wrong. But the Flor de Sevilla, for example, is enhanced with the flavor of oranges from Seville and other innovative botanicals. The Rangpur celebrates the connection between the United Kingdom and India by adding bay leaf, ginger, and Rangpur limes. And of course, don't forget the Tanqueray Ten, which is distilled once more in Tiny Ten, a small still.
