Skye is located in the northwest of Scotland, where the influence of the sea is significant and certainly impacts Talisker's whiskies. That's why Talisker has the slogan: Made by the Sea. Talisker Distillery
The Talisker distillery is one of the oldest whisky distilleries in the world and certainly in Isle of Skye, in the northwest of Scotland. While it started in 1830, after necessary modernizations, few things have changed in the recipe over the years. And that makes Talisker whisky so powerful. The MacAskill Brothers
Hugh and Kenneth MacAskill are the founders of Talisker Distillery, but their reputation is not entirely spotless. They played an important role in the so-called Highland clearances, also known as the 'Clearances'. Because sheep farming became attractive to landowners in the early 19th century, many tenants were driven from their farms. Some of them even left Skye, the island where Talisker is located.
The brothers did not only seek their fortune in sheep farming but also in whisky making. When they founded Talisker in 1830, some of the displaced tenants were employed there as workers. Hugh and Kenneth were not very successful by the way: in 1848 the bank took over their business. It proved difficult to make money with such a remote distillery.
Yet Talisker grew into one of the most famous whisky brands in the world. Blenders such as John Walker and Dewarappreciated the quality of Talisker. This is partly why the distillery still exists after all these years.
Peat, smoke, and salty sea air
There are few single malt whiskies with such a distinctive house style as Talisker. The flavor profile also perfectly matches the stormy landscape of the Isle of Skye. This whisky is rightly the pride of the island. The motto of the distillery? It has been 'Made by the Sea' for years.
Talisker has five stills and produces a single malt that is smoky, fruity, salty, and peppery. It is certainly not a smoke bomb like you sometimes taste from the famous whisky island Islay, but the smoky influence is certainly noticeable.
Almost every whisky made at Talisker is a tribute to the Isle of Skye. There is even a whisky named after the islandbut also one to the capital of the island, Portree (the old Gaelic spelling is Port Ruighe). The Talisker 10 has been a classic for many years and one of the best ten-year-old single malts available. A good example of the influence of cask maturation are the Distillers Editions, each finished in Amoroso sherry casks.
