The history of Suntory
Suntory, you know, the whisky that played such a prominent role in the film Lost in Translation with Bill Murray. Suntory was founded in 1899 by Shinjiro Torii, an ambitious man born for success. He was born when Emperor Meiji was in power. During that time, more and more Western influences came into Japan. At the age of 13, Torii started working at a pharmacist where Western drinks were also sold. He learned everything about blending flavors and aromas there.
When he started for himself in 1899, he succeeded in building a reputable reputation for his own shop within ten years, but his dream was to make whisky. That was achieved in 1923 with the establishment of the very first whisky distillery in Japan, YamazakiIn 1929, he launched the very first Japanese whisky, Suntory Shirofuda. The reception was not great, as it resembled too much the smoky whiskies from Scotland. A few years later, he introduced the Suntory Kabukin, a whisky that was adapted to the refined taste palette of the Japanese. This time it was a hit. The Kabukin became the most popular whisky in Japan.
The distilleries of Suntory
Suntory has several distilleries. The whisky produced there forms the heart of the different blends of Suntory, such as Hibiki. But the whiskies also appear as single malts on the market.
- Yamazakithe oldest and perhaps most famous distillery in Japan. It was the whisky from this distillery that gave birth to the current craze surrounding Japanese whisky.
- Hakushuthis distillery has been in existence since 1973 and is the second distillery in Suntory's portfolio. It is one of the highest distilleries in the world.
- Chitathis is the grain distillery, where whisky is made only in large distillation columns. The whisky from Chita is also seen as the dashi (Japanese broth) that maintains the harmony of Hibiki.
