Royal Brackla is the first whisky to ever receive a 'Royal Warrant', actually the British equivalent of the title of supplier to the court. Today, it still lives up to that name. Brackla may not be a whisky that enjoys worldwide fame, but the quality of this single malt is noteworthy. More and more enthusiasts are discovering the beautiful range of Royal Brackla. Are you one too?
Captain William Fraser is the founder of the Brackla distillery, located in the Scottish Highlands. He was known to be arrogant and stubborn, but he left a remarkable legacy. The only reason he established the distillery was to prevent the farmers on his estate from selling their barley to illegal distillers. This was not without struggle, as it was difficult for the Captain to compete locally. The illegal distillers were, of course, not pleased to give up part of their income.
The fact that he ultimately succeeded in his plan is due to clever marketing. He hired representatives in Aberdeen, Dundee, and other Scottish villages and towns. In 1826, the Captain even sent a large quantity of his whisky to London. It didn't take long for Brackla to become the most famous whisky in the British capital.
No one knows exactly how the Captain managed to be appointed as the purveyor to the court. Perhaps it had something to do with his friends in London or the network he had built during his army days. Whatever the reason, in 1833, King William IV granted permission to use the royal seal. It wasn't long after that Royal Brackla became known as 'The Whisky of the King'.
At the distillery, it all revolves around esters these days. These flavor components provide fruitiness and are created during fermentation. Therefore, that process is also quite lengthy. In addition, there is a lot of copper contact during distillation. This results in a fresh, fruity whisky that matures excellently in sherry casks — after all, that is the type of cask used by the owner John Dewar's & Sons most commonly used for Brackla.
Just like, for example Aberfeldy and Craigellachie, makes Royal Brackla part of 'The Last Great Malts'. This series consists of single malts from the five distilleries of John Dewar's.
Royal Brackla has a wide range. The whiskies range in age from 12 to 21 years. Each of the whiskies initially matures in ex-bourbon casks, but is then finished in ex-sherry casks, which gives the single malts a nice extra depth. Take your time to browse our webshop.
