Rémy Martin was originally a winegrower and founded his company in 1724. That was remarkably long ago, but among the famous Cognac houses, Martell is even nine years older. Family was central to Rémy Martin. Generation after generation, a member of the family led the company.
Each generation continued Rémy Martin's passion for Cognac, with quality always having the highest priority. At the end of the 18th century, the family bought extra land from their neighbors, just outside the town of Cognac. This expansion made Rémy Martin one of the largest and most prominent producers of Cognac even then. One of the most important success products is Rémy Martin's Louis XIII Cognac, which was first made in 1874 by Paul Emile Rémy Martin.
Today, the brand is in the hands of Rémy Cointreau, a collaboration between Rémy Martin and CointreauThis collaboration was partly made possible by the marriage between Genevieve Martin and Max Cointreau.
Why does Rémy Martin make Fine Champagne Cognac? What does that Champagne stand for? For that, some background knowledge of the Cognac industry is needed. Distilling grapes can happen anywhere in the world, and theoretically, a drink that closely resembles Cognac could be made in California, for example. But only when it is made in the French Cognac region can that drink actually be called Cognac.
The Cognac region consists of six different districts, each with its own characteristics. These characteristics are largely the result of different soil types. Cognac produced in the Grande Champagne or Petite Champagne districts is generally considered to be Cognac of the highest quality. When Cognac from both of those districts is combined, it is referred to as Fine Champagne Cognac.
The addition of Champagne has nothing to do with the sparkling wine, but with the district where the Cognac is made.
The range of Rémy Martin is extensive and there is something beautiful for every budget, starting with the Rémy Martin VS and VSOP. For those who want to experience extreme luxury, there is the Rémy Martin XO. The pièce de résistance is the Louis XIII, an uber-premium Cognac based on the recipe from 150 years ago.
