Midleton Irish Whiskey is made at the New Midleton Distillery in County Cork. It is a large distillery built in 1975 by Irish Distillers, a then new company founded by, among others, John Power & Son and John Jameson & Son.
At the New Midleton Distillery, not only whiskeys like Midleton Very Rare and Midleton Barry Crockett Legacy are made. The most famous Irish whiskey brand, Jameson, also comes from here. Additionally, well-known brands such as Powers, Redbreast, Green Spot, and Writers Tears are produced at the New Midleton Distillery.
The arrival of the New Midleton Distillery marked the end of the Old Jameson Distillery in Bow Street. Nowadays, there is an interactive, modern visitor center that is one of the most popular attractions in Dublin.
The very first master distiller of Midleton was Barry Crocket. He compares making whiskey to conducting an orchestra. According to him, it is a symphonic masterpiece of light, shadow, expertise, and passion. That passion stems from Midleton's rich history, which dates back to the 19th century.
In the early years of the 20th century, the Irish whiskey industry thrived. But a perfect storm brought the entire industry into troubled waters. The Irish War of Independence and Prohibition in the U.S. had a large negative impact on the sale of Irish whiskey. It took many decades for Irish whiskey to recover.
Midleton Very Rare played an important role in this. In 1984, Barry Crockett saw the opportunity to make an unparalleled whiskey from the great whiskey of Midleton Distillery. Since then, a new edition has been released every year. Midleton Very Rare consists of Irish pot still whiskey and grain whiskey that has matured in bourbon barrels.
As a guarantee, the master distiller's signature is on every bottle of Midleton Very Rare. Initially, this was Barry Crockett. Between 2013 and 2020, Brian Nation was at the helm. Nowadays, Kevin O'Gorman is the master distiller of Midleton.
