The Glenturret distillery is located north of the village of Crieff. At the back of the distillery flows the river Turret Burns, which originates on the mountain Ben Chonzie. The melt and rainwater from this 930-meter-high mountain first flows into the lake called Loch Turret, downstream the name of the river changes to Turret Burn before eventually flowing into the river Earn. The mountains surrounding the Glenturret distillery resemble towers, thus the translation of the name Glenturret is "The valley with its little towers". The distillery of Glenturret was established in 1775, making it the oldest distillery in Scotland. Given the rugged environment was ideal for hiding, illicit distillers had already been making whisky there since 1717. When the distillery was built, an official license was granted, and there are still buildings from that time on the distillery's grounds.
The Glenturret distillery was closed in 1921 and completely dismantled in 1929. In 1957, the distillery was purchased by James Fairlie, a true whisky lover. After that, a restaurant, tasting room with shop, and museum followed in the renovated malt floors. After the sale in 1990 to Highland Distilleries, James Fairlie retired. The distillery of Glenturret only has one wash still and one spirit still, thus Glenturret belongs to one of the smallest distilleries in Scotland. The barrels used are refill bourbon and sherry casks. At Glenturret, production runs continuously seven days a week and the average stock of barrels is only 6000 units. The majority of the total production at Glenturret is sold as malt whisky. The rest disappears into the blends of The Famous Grouse.
