In a relatively short time, Bulleit Bourbon has grown into an indispensable whiskey brand. This American giant is present in bars and living rooms all over the world, even though it hasn't been around for that long. But that's what happens when you combine passion, expertise, and a peculiar, mysterious history. Learn all about Bulleit Bourbon — perhaps even while enjoying a glass of this fine product?
Augustus Bulleit was a tavern keeper in Louisville, Kentucky around 1830. There he had only one goal: to make a bourbonwith a unique taste. After much experimentation, he finally found the character he was looking for, using a large portion of rye. However, on a fateful trip from Kentucky to New Orleans, Augustus disappeared. No one knows exactly what happened to him.
Especially around the story about Augustus Bulleit, which is part of the marketing around this brand, there are some questions. There is little evidence to be found that he ever lived in Louisville, had his own bar, or distilled whiskey. Yet, this story was the reason to revive the brand generations later.
That's what Tom Bulleit did in 1995. He quit his career as a lawyer, taking a big risk, but it paid off very well. Bulleit has grown into one of the most popular bourbons in the United States.
That is the big question everyone wants answered, but very few know the answer. Once Bulleit was made at Four Roses, but that's no longer the case. There is no such thing as a Bulleit Distillery, although the stock is aging at the Stitzel-Weller Distillery.
What we do know is that Bulleit Bourbon is made in Kentucky. The recipe consists of corn (68%), rye (28%), and malted barley (4%). Is nobody willing to take a guess? Of course, there are not many distilleries in Kentucky with the capacity to produce enough for Bulleit. So maybe it's secretly made at Jim Beam, Heaven Hill, or Barton? We will probably never know.
One important reason for the success of Bulleit Bourbon is the delicious cocktails you can make with it. This was quickly discovered by bartenders around the world, making Bulleit so much more than just a whiskey. A Whiskey Sour with Bulleit, for example, is lovely for the summer, while a Hot Toddy is great in the darker months.
