The history of Veuve Clicquot
Madame Clicquot was born in Reims in 1777. As the daughter of Baron Nicolas Ponsardin, she was able to receive an excellent education thanks to her social status, based on the traditional customs and values of the time. In 1798, she married François Clicquot, the son of the founder of Maison Clicquot. François shared his passion and knowledge for the creation and distribution of champagne with his young wife. It was because she had spent this time by his side that Madame Clicquot could take over the reins of the family house after François' untimely death in 1805.
She seized every new opportunity that arose and was willing to take risks, which allowed her to expand her business to all corners of the world. Uncompromising about the quality of her wines, she perfected new production techniques. She invented the "table de remuage" to clarify champagne and innovated the very first blend of rosé champagne. In just a few years, she made her name a brand of excellence, a name that is known worldwide today. Her peers already recognized her formidable contributions and called her the "Grande Dame of Champagne."
