There are very few distilleries in Scotland that legally distilled whisky before 1823. This was due to the excise legislation that was only adjusted in that year, making it legal to distill whisky. However, a license was required for this. It cost £10 at the time, which would be about £1200 today.
On the small Islay, however, there are a handful of distilleries that were able to start much earlier. Ardbeg was founded in 1815 just like Laphroaig. Lagavulin followed a year later. And Bowmore has existed since 1779. This was made possible by the laird of Islay, Walker Frederick Campbell. He welcomed new distilleries because he realized that this would bring economic prosperity.
Therefore, brothers Alexander and Donald Johnston were able to establish Laphroaig at that time. Donald was responsible for daily management but tragically lost his life in 1847. However, the distillery remained in the hands of the family until the 1960s.
Bessie Williamson moved to Islay in 1934 to start working as an accountant at Laphroaig. Originally, she was supposed to stay for three months, but she quickly demonstrated her value. Within a considerable time, she rose to manager of the distillery. She was already in that position when World War II broke out.
When her boss and owner Ian Hunter passed away in 1954 (he was the last generation of the founding family), she inherited the distillery. Under her leadership, Laphroaig experienced a great deal of prosperity. Even today, Laphroaig from the 1960s is considered possibly the best Scotch whisky of all time.
Laphroaig is one of the few distilleries that still malts a portion of its own barley. This is usually done in large specialized factories, but at Laphroaig, the malting floors have been deliberately maintained. By still malting themselves, certain important smoky flavors are preserved that are not expected to be replicated by commercial maltings.
The sweet flavor of Laphroaig is mainly due to the influence of ex-bourbon barrels. This type of barrel became the norm at Laphroaig after Prohibition, when owner Ian Hunter regularly traveled to America. The effect of this type of oak can still be seen today in the Laphroaig Quarter Cask, one of the most popular whiskies from this distillery.
