Glenfarclas is one of the most traditional distilleries that Scotland has to offer. For more than 150 years, the same family has been at the helm, which means that independence is highly valued. Glenfarclas is well-regarded by connoisseurs, who each fall in love with this sherry cask aged Scottish single malt. Can't wait to discover Glenfarclas? Glenfarclas is located in the Speyside region, but the labels state Highland Single Malt Scotch whisky. This is confusing but easy to explain. Speyside is actually a subregion of the Scottish Highlands, so distilleries can ultimately choose which region to display on the label.
Because the owners of Glenfarclas traditionally see their distillery as part of the Highlands, that is the region they mention on the label. Glenfarclas is not the only distillery that chooses this. Also Macallan is located in Speyside but calls itself a Highland whisky.
Glenfarclas means 'the valley of the green grass', which is a reference to the fertile ground on which this distillery is located. It is therefore not surprising that there has also been a farm since 1790, which only closed its doors in 1988. At one point, Glenfarclas even had the second oldest herd of Aberdeen Angus cattle.
Glenfarclas was officially founded in 1844, as that was the year a license was applied for. But most likely, distilling had been going on for much longer. Illegally, though. In 1865, Glenfarclas came into the hands of John Grant, who bought the distillery for 512 pounds. Today, the distillery is still owned by his descendants.
The casks in which Glenfarclas whisky matures all come from Jerez, an area in Spain where sherry is made. Glenfarclas exclusively matures in Oloroso sherry casks. In 2007, the distillery launched 'The Family Casks'. This exclusive range consists entirely of single casks, from 1952 up to whisky distilled at the beginning of this millennium.
For six generations and for more than 150 years, the Grant family has been at the helm of Glenfarclas. This is unprecedented in the Scottish whisky industry, where most distilleries are owned by large multinationals. Fun fact: each of the six generations of owners is named John or George. However, the current generation, George Grant, has two daughters. So it could very well be that for the first time, there will be no John or George in charge.
