Famous Dutch whiskies
Nowadays, there are many small whiskey distilleries in the Netherlands. They produce whiskey on a limited scale and thereby uphold the long Dutch tradition in the field of spirits. Their whiskeys are usually mainly sold in the region. However, there are also some whiskey distilleries that operate on a larger scale.
One of the most famous whiskies is Frysk Hynder. This is made at Us Heit, a distillery in the Frisian town of Bolsward. Artisanally distilled with all the characteristics of the true Frisian horse: powerful, headstrong, and cast in an extremely beautiful form. Frysk Hynder was even the very first Dutch whiskey ever. It was first sold in 2005.
By that time Patrick van Zuidam, the master distiller of Zuidam Distillers in Baarle-Nassau, had been making whisky for years. However, he waited until 2007 to launch his whisky. Under the name Millstone he is now gaining international fame. His Millstone 100 Rye has won many awards.
Dutch & distilling
Although we have not been making whisky in the Netherlands for very long, the Dutch have been excellent at distilling for centuries. In fact, in the past we even regularly lent a hand to the Scots. In the 16th century, the expertise of the Dutch was highly regarded: if it was about distilling, you had to go to the Dutch.
The Scottish Haig family, who were at the birth of the modern whisky industry, understood this too. One of the family members left for the Netherlands in 1623 to learn the finer points of the distilling trade. It was the beginning of a relationship between the Haig family and the Netherlands that would last for generations.
It is not an exaggeration to say that the Dutch professionalized the production of Scottish aqua vitae. The Scots did have a network of abbeys and monasteries where alcohol was produced, but with the arrival of the Dutch, the next step was taken. They understood what was needed for that, because it was the Dutch who in the 16e and 17e century breathed life into the first global drink category: gin.
