The current form of The Singleton was established in 2006, but long before that, there was already The Singleton of Auchroiska single malt that first appeared on the market in 1986. This name was chosen at the time because Auchroisk was difficult to pronounce for many people. Among whisky writers and judges of whisky competitions, this single malt performed very well, but for no apparent reason, The Singleton of Auchroisk has never really grown into a big name.
That is striking, because innovative was the brand back then. After the original aging in ex-bourbon barrels, the single malt was transferred to sherry casks for an extra aging period. This process, which we now know well as 'finishing', was never heavily advertised at the time. As a result, other brands are now seen as pioneers in this area, while The Singleton of Auchroisk certainly also played a role in it.
Diageo is by far the largest producer of Scotch whisky. Not only is this multinational the owner of the largest number of distilleries, but also in terms of pure quantity of whisky, Diageo leads the way. Single malts from distilleries such as Lagavulin, Talisker, Cardhu, and Mortlach are highly esteemed among whisky enthusiasts worldwide.
Purely in terms of sales figures, none of these distilleries, however, is the best-selling Scotch single malt brand, simply because their production capacity is relatively modest. That honor goes to Glenfiddich, closely followed by Glenlivet. With The Singleton, a whisky brand that combines the strengths of three Diageo distilleries, the company makes a bid for that top spot.
The three distilleries that fall under The Singleton are Dufftown, Glen Ord, and Glendullan. The Singleton of Dufftown is available in Europe, while the other two are sold in Asia and North America respectively. Occasionally, a whisky from Glen Ord or Glendullan is also released in Europe, for example, certain limited editions that are part of the Special Releases.
The Singleton of Dufftown is distilled at the Dufftown distillery, named after the famous village in the heart of Speyside, which is also home to Mortlach and the closed distillery Pittyvaich. Dufftown was long in the hands of Arthur Bell & Sons, so it's no surprise that the whisky is still an important part of the famous Bell's blended whisky. Until Roseisle opened in 2010, Dufftown was Diageo's largest distillery. The oldest The Singleton of Dufftown ever was launched in 2019 when a 53-year-old single malt from the Paragon of Time Collection was presented.
