From brewery to distillery
Glenmorangie originally began its life as a brewery in the village of Tain, located in the northern Highlands of Scotland. In 1843, it was William Matheson who decided to convert Glenmorangie into a distillery. After all, the first part of the production process has many similarities to brewing beer.
Soon it became a single malt of which was noted throughout the entire United Kingdom (and beyond). As early as the 19th century, Glenmorangie was on the map of The Savory and many other luxury hotels in London. That success as a single malt has actually never disappeared - even today it is one of the best-selling Scottish single malts in the world.
As tall as a giraffe
It takes time and energy to maintain the high quality that Glenmorangie strives for. There are also a number of important characteristics that ensure this whisky has such a unique flavor. First of all, there are the stills, which are incredibly tall. At 5.14 meters (the same height as an adult giraffe), they are the tallest copper pot stills in Scotland.
Why was that ever chosen? It’s almost a coincidence. In 1887, Glenmorangie took over a pair of stills from John Taylor's gin distillery. Stills for gin traditionally have a different shape than whisky stills. But wonderfully, this choice turned out great for Glenmorangie. Because the alcohol vapors have to climb significantly during distillation, many of the heavier components remain in the still, which means the final Glenmorangie whisky is light and smooth and easy to drink.
The mineral-rich water that Glenmorangie uses comes from Tarlogie, a private spring. This has been filtered through sandstone for 100 years. Most Scottish water is quite low in minerals, which gives Glenmorangie a different flavor profile compared to many other Scottish distilleries.
Extra maturation
Glenmorangie uses its casks a maximum of two times. Casks are responsible for a large share of the flavor of Scottish whiskyso the more you use a cask, the less flavor is transferred. Compare it to a teabag that you use multiple times.
By the way, Glenmorangie is one of the pioneers in the field of extra maturation, as they call it. That means that a whisky first matures in the usual ex-bourbon casks. It is then transferred to another cask to introduce a new layer of complexity. These can be, for example, Port, Sherry, Sauternes, or Burgundy casks.
