Who would be the first to ever have the brilliant idea to mature whisky in former sherry casks? These casks have been used for centuries in the Scottish whisky industry. Sherry is a fortified wine that is made only in a specific region of Spain. Casks that were previously used for the maturation of sherry have a sublime influence on the taste of whisky.
It's no wonder that some of the world's biggest brands have built their reputation on this process. Macallan is probably the most famous example, but nowadays GlenDronach is seen by connoisseurs as the absolute pinnacle for lovers of sherry-aged whiskies.
History of GlenDronach
GlenDronach is located at the Dronach Burn in the northeast of Scotland. Officially, it is a distillery from the Highland region, but GlenDronach is not far from the border of the famous Speyside. GlenDronach was founded in 1826 by James Allardice and did well right from the start. The whisky was quickly sold in London, which at the time was perhaps the epicenter of Western civilization. Unfortunately, GlenDronach was destroyed by a fire in 1837.
The distillery was rebuilt a few years later and was among others in the hands of the son of William Grant. More recently, it was Billy Walker who gave the distillery new momentum. Under his leadership in the early 2010s of this millennium, GlenDronach became a whisky to reckon with. This did not escape the big players either. Brown-Forman (the parent company of Jack Daniel'sGlenDronach was bought in 2016 for hundreds of millions of dollars.
Rachel Barrie
Brown-Forman appointed Rachel Barrie as the successor to Billy Walker. She has big shoes to fill because Walker is generally regarded as one of the best master blenders in the whisky industry. He is now the owner of GlenAllachiewhere whiskies immediately receive much praise again.
But Rachel Barrie is a professional with perhaps an equally great reputation as Walker. She previously worked for Bowmore and Glen Garioch, and nowadays shows at GlenDronach that she has not forgotten the craft.
