The Lowlands have a beautiful hilly landscape with vast fields that are ideal for growing barley. You can also taste this friendly landscape in the whisky, which generally has a more accessible, lighter style than the Scottish whiskies from the Highlands.
Until not so long ago, there were actually only two distilleries left producing malt whisky: Glenkinchie and Auchentoshan. The region actually had a very difficult time during the 20th century. Not a single distillery was added (unless you count Stronachie in 1900). And between 1894 and 1929, 26 distilleries had to close their doors.
But the tide seems to have turned with the arrival of a large number of new distilleries, and an old familiar one has been completely restored to its former glory. Bladnoch had to close at the start of this century, but thanks to an Australian entrepreneur who poured millions into it, a wonderful, traditional Lowland whisky is now being produced again.
Traditionally, whisky in the Scottish Lowlands is distilled not two, but three times. This means the whisky gets to see the inside of such a beautiful copper still three times, contributing to the classic flavor profile of Lowland whisky. The whiskies from this region are traditionally lighter in color and body, often elegant and subtle, but always full of character and never boring. Triple distillation is now rarely done in the Lowlands.
Auchentoshan: this distillery is located not far from Glasgow and is therefore a popular day trip for tourists staying in this Scottish city. Auchentoshan is currently the only distillery in the Lowlands (and Scotland) that triple distills all its whisky. This means that Auchentoshan's whiskies are generally mild in taste.
Glenkinchie: located in the countryside among the barley fields about 30 kilometers from the busy capital, Edinburgh. Glenkinchie has the largest stills in Scotland. The 1.3 million liters produced annually may sound like a lot, but it pales in comparison to giants like Glenfiddich and Macallan.
Bladnoch: for a moment it seemed Bladnoch was lost to whisky enthusiasts. Until the Australian David Prior appeared on the scene. Thanks to him, this distillery is running at full capacity again and more than 200 years of history are saved.
