The history of The Glenlivet
The history of The Glenlivet dates back to 1823. Officially, that is, because that was the moment founder George Smith received a license. Likely, this farmer also distilled illegal whisky long before that. Turning to the straight path was not without danger. Smuggling whisky was a lucrative business, and gangsters were therefore not happy with the legalization of whisky. That is why George always traveled with two pistols just in case his former colleagues wanted to teach him a lesson.
It turned out to be worth the risk, because his whisky quickly became renowned. However, this also brought problems for George. Glenlivet was once used as a collective name for all whisky from what is now the Speyside region. And that was confusing for his customers. Therefore, it was determined in 1884 that only the whisky from the Smith family could use the definite article 'The'. Since then, this whisky has been known as the one and only The Glenlivet.
Tradition and innovation
The Glenlivet is built on tradition. The classic 12-year-old and Founder's Reserve have been made in the same way for many decades. The same goes for the particularly popular 18-year-old Glenlivet. There may be a few more and larger copper stills nowadays than in George Smith's time, but the distillation process has changed very little overall.
But although that tradition has brought The Glenlivet a great deal of prosperity, Alan Winchester, the current master blender, sometimes dares to take a different approach. For example, there is the Captain's Reserve, a single malt that matured in Cognac casks.
But the most striking is still the so-called 'black' series. For example, there is The Glenlivet Spectra which consists of a trio of mysterious single malts.
