Cardhu is one of the oldest distilleries in the Speyside region. The story behind this distillery is certainly worth telling. Women played an important role from the very beginning and Johnnie Walker was once the owner of this historic distillery. Today, Cardhu still makes delicious, accessible whiskies that are worth discovering. Check out the extensive range of Tasting Collection here!
Without the Cummings family, Cardhu would never have existed. The distillery was unofficially established in 1811 when John Cummings and his wife Helen became the new tenants. At that time, the distillery was still called Cardow. Cummings was a notorious smuggler, and soon he and Helen started distilling illegal whisky.
John was convicted three times for his illegal activities, although it was most likely his wife Helen who distilled the whisky. According to legend, Helen would raise a red flag whenever tax officials were spotted nearby, so that their neighbors could take the necessary measures. In 1823, Cardhu received a license, and from that point on, it operated legally.
Helen Cumming's daughter-in-law Elizabeth took over the business in 1872. In 1884 she completely renovated the distillery and sold the old stills to William Grant, which subsequentlyGlenfiddichfounded. By that time, Cardhu was popular among the great whisky blenders of that era due to its great quality, although the whisky was also sold as single malt in London.
The success of Cardhu did not go unnoticed by John Walker & Sons. The company, which was then led by the grandsons of John Walker, acquired the distillery in 1893. However, the Cummings family did gain a seat on the board of John Walker & Sons. From that moment on, Cardhu solidified its position as the foundation of Johnnie Walker's whiskies. Cardhu is therefore seen as the spiritual home of Johnnie Walker.
Less than a third of the production is bottled as single malt, but what appears on the market is very popular among beginner whisky drinkers. Even advanced enthusiasts often praise the potential of Cardhu.
Due to the connection with Johnnie Walker, the distillery is a popular destination for whisky lovers. The current owner Diageo therefore spends a lot of money on improving the visitor center of Cardhu. In total, Diageo allocated no less than £150 million in 2018 for whisky tourism, of which a significant part is reserved for Cardhu. Furthermore, facilities at Caol Ila, Clynelish, and Glenkinchie have also been upgraded.
Cardhu has a wide range of popular, affordable single malts such as Amber Rock and Gold Reserve, or 12- or 15-year-old whiskies. Cardhu is also part of the nine Game of Thrones single maltsThe whisky is soft, fruity, and accessible: perfect for any whisky lover!
