It is claimed that Bowmore has existed since 1779, but there is little evidence that whisky was actually made there at that time. The first evidence dates from 1816, when one John Simpson applied for a license to distill. However, it took some time before Bowmore whisky caught the attention of the general public. This only happened after Wm & Jas. Mutter, a whisky blender from Glasgow, took over the distillery in 1837. A few years later, there was a request from Windsor Castle for a cask – the sign that they were indeed doing something good on that small Scottish island. Today, Bowmore is owned by the Japanese whisky maker Suntory.
At Bowmore, approximately 2 million liters of alcohol are produced each year. That's a lot, but nevertheless, Bowmore is certainly not the largest distillery in Scotland. In fact, Bowmore hangs a bit at the bottom of the midfield. In terms of quality, however, the distillery can compete with the absolute top. This is partly due to a precise and traditional production process.
What sets Bowmore apart from other distilleries is the fact that they still malt barley themselves here. Not for the entire production, but for about 20 to 25 percent. In the past, all distilleries did this, but nowadays this part of the production process is often outsourced to large malt houses. Anyone who is lucky enough to visit Bowmore may get the chance to enter the kiln. There, the barley is dried using peat smoke, which brings with it a delightful aroma.
Most of Bowmore's whisky matures on the Scottish mainland (after all, there is only limited space on Islay), but a limited number of casks remain on the island. These are housed in The Vaults No.1, a warehouse that is more than two centuries old and located below sea level on the coast. Whisky from The Vaults No.1 is rare and often of exceptional quality.
The distillery has regularly brought special limited editions to the market in the past. One of them is the so-called Devil's Casks, a series of three whiskies named after a legend about a visit from the devil to Islay. But the most striking example is certainly the Black Bowmore. By now, four different editions have been released. The first appeared in 1993 and cost about 120 euros at that time. That was an incredible amount for a single malt back then, but nowadays it is being asked for without batting an eye 25,000 euros.
