A unique family business
The Balvenie is part of William Grant & Sons. This family business is also the owner of Glenfiddich, the most popular single malt in the world, and Girvan, a grain distillery. Thus, William Grant is the largest independent whisky company in Scotland. That is remarkable, because this industry is (like many others) dominated by multinationals.
William Grant was born in 1839 and was once the accountant and manager of Mortlach, a notorious distillery in the village of Dufftown. But William Grant wanted to start for himself. So he bought second-hand stills and founded Glenfiddich in 1887; right on the other side of the village. Less than five years later, Balvenie opened its doors as well.
The craft of The Balvenie
Balvenie is one of the few distilleries in Scotland where everything is still done in-house from start to finish. Nowadays, some important tasks are centralized, such as malting the barley. This is often done at one of the large maltings in Scotland.
But despite the fact that The Balvenie is certainly not a small player (7 million liters are produced annually), they still have their own malting floor. About 15% of the necessary barley is processed there. That is quite unique, as only a handful of distilleries in Scotland can claim that as well.
This Speyside distillery also has its own cooperage that is shared with Glenfiddich. There, all casks for The Balvenie are prepared. Since casks are responsible for a significant part of the flavor of single malt whisky, it is a great advantage to have control over that.
